Rock Meadow Snow Day

I went out to paint in the snow for the first time.  Warm boots, coat, snow pants- but cold fingers and hard to adjust to gloves.  The light was fantastic and you realize how many people are out and about in our local conservation land- hiking and skiing and walking dogs.  It was a great way to spend the afternoon and I am very happy with the result.

I was in Phoenix last week and had an afternoon to get out to the desert a bit.  I am always taken by thee colors-the reds and rusts and browns against golds and greens- so different from my New England home.

First Foliage

Occasionally on Sundays I get to take part in at 'plein air' meetup and yesterday I met a great group in Lexington Center on the historic green where the American revolution began.  The day was just the right temperature, clear skies and great sun.  There were lots of tourists in town on fall foliage bus tours and it was fun to talk with them while I painted.   I am beginning to gain some confidence painting outside in the midst of onlookers.  You meet so many interesting and nice people who are genuinely interested to watch an artist work.  Great fun!

Summer Studio

I'm sharing a plein air painting that I completed two years ago with a friend on a lazy afternoon.  It is one of my first attempts to paint outside and I have it hanging in my office to remind me that I am an artist as I work on other projects.  At the time, I had converted a lawn shed into a studio for the summer and It is a favorite space-like being at summer camp in a rustic cabin.  On the lessons learned front, I am realizing what I most enjoy painting-most landscapes or seascapes with some sense of structure and great light.

I worked on two paintings on Tuesday, both at a small town beach landing in West Barnstable.  It seems there are views like this one at the end of every dead end lane here.  This is the Cape that most who visit once or twice may never stumble on.

I finished this one early this morning after a start on it last weekend.  Working on managing greens and brush strokes.  Painting is such a lifetime of lessons.  I am never bored.   I am calling he week ahead 'Cape Cod Plein Air Paint Camp'.  I am currently the only attendee to this outing, but have the whole week off and intend to make the most of it!  If you are on the Cape and want to join in the fun, let me know.

Lighthouse

I decided to post one that I did some time ago just because I really love it.  I caught a photo of the lighthouse at Race Point near Truro on Cape Cod last summer and wanted to capture the sense of warm sunlight that day.  I've slowed down a bit since the September 30 Day challenge but am still painting regularly and have 2 on my easel now that I am working on.  The daily pace doesn't allow time for larger pieces or complex subjects.  More to come.
